At first glance, nothing may especially stand out about British outfit Noah and the Whale, their songs running along fairly familiar-seeming folk/pop influences, but somehow they keep finding themselves bubbling up irrepressibly into the rotation here at Casa de Freshness. Effective, heartfelt songwriting, expertly delivered by Charlie Fink's mellifluous baritone, really seems to be the fulcrum by which the Noah and the Whale's music is elevated into something truly special, but that's not to discount the value of the other elements - a band cannot succeed without a certain creative alchemy, and in this case, the strings, horns, drums and vocals all intertwine beautifully with an undeniably endearing earnestness.
