The world lost a unique and beautiful voice this month, and it seems only fitting to pay some sort of tribute to her passing. Lhasa De Sela came from humble beginnings and captivated the world with her profoundly expressive voice and unique personality. Her first album, 'La Llorona', earned several awards and propelled her act from the bars of Montreal onto the international stage. After moving to France, she further refined her craft with the sublimely mournful 'The Living Road', sung in English, French and Spanish, which was named by the Times of London as one of the 10 best world albums of the decade. She finished her final album, 'Lhasa' (which she arranged and produced herself), while in the midst of the struggle with breast cancer which would ultimately claim her life. There almost seems in retrospect to be a sort of eerie prescience in her songs, as though all the way along she harbored some wistful inner knowledge that her time in this world was to be entirely too short. It is always sad to see such a beautiful being depart this world, but we can at least be thankful that, during her time here, she was able to capture some of that fleeting beauty and share it with us.
