OK, one more meditation on melancholy before the abundant joy of springtime sweeps us up entirely in its giddy jig. Boston singer-songwriter Marissa Nadler's latest album, Little Hells, has been haunting my stereo lately in the most beautiful way. Her fragile, otherworldly voice, exquisitely produced by Chris Coady (who, as some of you may remember, also produced Beach House's latest album - I'd say he's having a good year so far), lilts in its characteristically sorrowful style while allowing just the tenderest glimpses of bittersweet optimism to shine through, and the effect is positively captivating. This CD should come prepackaged with a bag of earl grey and a rainy day.
